Consumer Checklist for Language Learning Programs
From APEC HRDWG Wiki
Consumer checklists for language learning programs provide an easily accessible list of evaluation criteria to determine if a language school or training program has reliable claims regarding building and enhancing learners’ language skills. In order to help consumers make informed decisions, checklists include information about assessing whether materials and resources use evidence-based practices. The development of checklists are activities of the Strategic Plan for English and Other Languages and will be in the format of questions to ask when exploring language study at a language institute or when examining language training materials. Another section of this wiki explores the factors affecting the time required to learn a language.
The APEC Checklist for English Language Programs has been developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) for those interested in choosing an effective English language learning program. CAL has also provided a more detailed Consumer Checklist that includes sufficient background information about differences among language programs to help the consumer make an educated decision. For a record of the development process of CAL's English Language Program Checklist, please see here.
The Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) has developed the APEC Chinese Language Checklist, addresses the learning needs of all kinds of people focusing on academic study, general conversation, special purposes (Business Chinese, Chinese for Travel and Tourism, primary and secondary school Chinese), teacher training and scholarships. Learning methods are face-to-face and online learning. This checklist was compiled so that students could easily identify the programs that are the most beneficial to their field of study. The Checklist also includes the numerous scholarships that the students can be awarded while studying in China.
