Objectives:
- Deliver a research basis on which to develop the APEC education strategic plan for developing students’ 21st Century skills and new postsecondary education systems that can create flexible, adaptable, skillful workforce addressing the demands of the global economy and regional economic integration.
- Share and enhance understanding of this research base as it provides education solutions to critical APEC challenges like the global financial crisis, environmental sustainability, and disaster reduction, especially for developing economies.
- Provide draft recommendations for the APEC education ministers 2012-2016 strategic action plan to meet the challenges of globalization, innovation and cooperation
APEC - Tsukuba International Conference: Innovation of Mathematics Education through Lesson Study Challenges to Emergency Preparedness for Mathematics

Description: Based on the experience of APEC-HRDWG Mathematics Lesson Study Project (2006-2011) which nineteen member economies have been participated, APEC approved the project 'Emergency Preparedness Education: Learning from Experience, Science of Disasters, and Preparing for the Future' (HRD 04 11A) which was proposed by Japan and Thailand. This project develops e-textbooks on mathematics for emergency preparation though the lesson studies done by the specialists. Mathematics is the major literacy subject which develops problem solving ability and every child learn it almost every day from the first grade of elementary school until upper secondary school.
This project in the year 2012 is the first project on the consecutively-planned projects during three years. Major disasters which we should prepare in school educations are Earthquake, Tsunami, Flood, Typhoon, Fire and Volcanic Eruption. The year 2012 project only focuses on Earthquake and Tsunami. The second project in the year 2013 will focus on Flood and Typhoon. The third project in the year 2014 will focus on Fire, Volcanic Eruption and challenges for recovery.
