Classroom videos from Lesson Study
From APEC HRDWG Wiki
APEC's Education Network (EDNET) is conducting a project, called Classroom Innovations through Lesson Study, which explores the use of Lesson Study in Mathematics Education. The Lesson Study videos of classrooms included in the project can serve as models of mathematical teaching or as a focus of discussion. Lesson Study videos have been developed because they are helpful in depicting the methods used by teachers who practice lesson study. The Guide for planning and analyzing mathematics lessons in lesson study may be helpful in conjunction with these videos.

Grade 3 (Japan) |
This 50-minute research lesson was presented at Sapporo City Maruyama Elementary School to a class of 40 students. It is the fourth in a series of 13 lessons. The preceding lesson considered the product "20 times 3," and the students were encouraged to calculate the number of black circles in the array. |
|
Grade 6 (Japan) |
This research lesson was presented at Sapporo City Hokuto Elementary School to a class of 27 students. It focuses on finding the value of two quantities that satisfy two conditions. |
|
Grade 5 (Japan) |
This research lesson was presented at the University of Tsukuba Elementary School in Tokyo. Its purpose is to strengthen students' academic ability through relishing the joy of thinking. The teacher challenges students to use, multiple approaches to calculate, the area of a circle. |
|
"Do I Have a Window Seat or an Aisle Seat?" Grade 5 (Japan) |
This research lesson was taught by Yutaka Hase. The double-period lesson was presented at Shinjuku-Kuritsu Ichigaya Elementary School to a class of 40 students. It is the third in a sequence of three lessons. The focus is helping students understand that whole numbers can be categorized into several sets through the instruction of even and odd numbers. To expand the topic, the lesson planning group decided to include categorization of whole numbers by paying attention to remainders of division. |
|
"Let’s think about how to multiply and divide fractions by fractions!" Grade 6 (Japan) |
This Grade 6 research lesson was taught at Takehaya Elementary School Attached to Tokyo Gakugei University. It was a part of the school based lesson study. The lesson was taught by Mr. Takeshi Yamada to a class of 41 students. The lesson was a part of the unit focusing on multiplying and dividing by fractions, i.e., fractions as the multiplier or the divisor. Students have previously studied multiplication and division of decimal numbers as well as multiplying and dividing fractions by whole numbers and multiplying fractions by fractions. The lesson is an introductory lesson on dividing by a fraction. |
|
Grade 5 (Japan) |
This Grade 5 lesson was taught at Takehaya Elementary School Attached to Tokyo Gakugei University. Mr. Masahiro Seki taught this lesson to a class of 39 students. The lesson centers around the problem, "2 meters of wire weighs 24.8 grams. If you have 6 meters of the same wire, how much will it weigh?" |
|
(Singapore) | This lesson emphasizes clear communication of problem-solving strategies in the context of finding areas of trapeziums without knowledge of the formula. |
|
Sides of Squares and the symbol ‘√’ (Grade 7, U.S.A.) |
This lesson was taught by Tom McDougal in May, 2009 at the Chicago Lesson Study Conference. The goal of this lesson is to help students understand the idea of square root, and the symbol '√', as describing the length of the side of a square with a given area. |
|
Interpreting the graph of the derivative of a function (Grade 11, U.S.A.) |
This lesson was taught by Matsuo Marti at Jones College Preparatory High School in Chicago on October 24, 2008. The planning team developed the lesson during the Lesson Study Summer Institute 2008, supported by the Chicago Lesson Study Group. This lesson aims to strengthen students' understanding of the relationship between the graph of a function and the graph of its derivative by having students work backwards—determining what the shape of the function graph might be based on the graph of its derivative. |
|
Does the area of the quadrilateral change? (Grade 6, U.S.A.) |
This lesson was taught by Dr. Akihiko Takahashi in May, 2007 at the Chicago Lesson Study Conference. The teacher uses a rectangle constructed from plastic strips, and asks students if the area remains the same or changes as the strips pivot slightly to make a new parallelogram. The lesson develops the concept of height of a parallelogram and leads to the formula, area = base x height. |
|
How many cards do we need to display the dates? (Grade 3, U.S.A.) |
In order to deepen students’ understanding of the concept of place value notation, this lesson is designed to help students think about how their previous learning of the base-ten place-value system can be used to solve problems in students’ everyday life. Through problem solving, students are expected to deepen their understanding the concept of place value as well as to develop problem-solving skills. This lesson was taught by Dr. Akihiko Takahashi in May, 2009 at the Chicago Lesson Study Conference. |
