Introduction
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) provides data on 4th and 8th Grade Mathematics and Science achievement of students in various APEC economies. The results can be broken down by specific knowledge areas within Math and Science or by other factors. Beyond student performance, the study also provides information on student, family, school, and teacher characteristics. Student characterictics include factors like student computer use and participation in extracurricular activities, family characteristics include various factors from ethnicity to home resources, school characteristics include factors like access to internet and school safety, and finally, teacher characteristics include factors like teacher education and collaboration. This type of information allows for an international comparison of schools and teachers that can be used to further understand which characteristics are used to understand and assess school and teacher quality indicators across APEC economies.
Below are the graphs of average scale scores of various APEC economies on the 2007 Mathematics section of the TIMSS for 4th and 8th graders. Only the APEC economies with a complete data set are included. For more information on the data provided here, including statistical analysis like standard deviation and significance tests, please visit the Internationa Data Explorer feature of the NCES website at http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/international/ide/.
